Neurodivergence is a term that describes brains that function, learn, or process information in ways that differ from the “neurotypical” norm. It’s a concept that is gaining more recognition as we begin to understand the vast spectrum of human cognition.

At Enlightened Minds, we work closely with individuals who identify as neurodivergent, helping them embrace their unique strengths while navigating the challenges they may face. In this article, we’ll explore the 11 types of neurodivergence, followed by real-life case studies of people who have embraced their neurodivergence with the right support.

11 Types Of Neurodivergence

1. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

ADHD affects focus, impulse control, and energy levels. Some people struggle with inattention, while others experience hyperactivity or a combination of both.

2. Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)

Autism affects communication, social interactions, and sensory processing. It exists on a spectrum, meaning each person experiences it differently.

3. Dyslexia

A learning difference that affects reading, writing, and spelling but does not impact intelligence. Many dyslexic individuals excel in problem-solving and creative thinking.

4. Dyscalculia

Similar to dyslexia but affects numerical understanding, making math-related tasks more difficult.

5. Dysgraphia

A condition that impacts handwriting and fine motor skills, often making writing physically painful or difficult to read.

6. Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder – DCD)

Affects movement and coordination, impacting activities such as balance, handwriting, and fine motor skills.

7. Tourette’s Syndrome

A neurological condition characterised by involuntary tics, which can be physical (blinking, head jerking) or vocal (making sounds or words).

8. Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)

Affects how the brain interprets sensory input, causing hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity to touch, sound, light, or other stimuli.

9. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

A condition where repetitive thoughts (obsessions) lead to compulsive behaviors, often linked to anxiety and control mechanisms.

10. Hyperlexia

When children develop an advanced ability to read beyond their age but struggle with understanding language and social communication.

11. Synesthesia

A fascinating condition where one sense triggers another—such as seeing colors when hearing music or associating numbers with textures.

Case Study 1: Sam’s Journey with ADHD & Dyslexia

Sam, a 32-year-old graphic designer, always struggled with reading and organisation. School was a nightmare—teachers dismissed him as “lazy” because he couldn’t follow written instructions. At work, his creativity shone through, but deadlines and written communication were constant challenges.

After attending one of our Enlightened Minds workshops, Sam discovered strategies to manage ADHD symptoms, such as time-blocking and voice-to-text tools. Recognising dyslexia as a strength rather than a weakness empowered him. Today, he advocates for neurodivergent-friendly workplaces and uses his visual thinking skills to create stunning digital art.

Case Study 2: Olivia’s Life with Autism & Sensory Processing Disorder

Olivia, 27, struggled with social interactions and found noisy environments overwhelming. For years, she masked her autistic traits, leading to burnout and anxiety. At her previous job, fluorescent lights, constant chatter, and an open-plan office made every day exhausting.

Through our support group and one-on-one coaching, Olivia learned about sensory-friendly accommodations and how to set boundaries. She now works remotely, using noise-canceling headphones and a structured work schedule. More importantly, she has found a community of like-minded neurodivergent individuals who understand and support her.
