ADHD Assessment For Your Children In Scotland

Enlightened Minds can provide formal assessment and diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) for Children (age 6+)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition that typically becomes noticeable in childhood and can continue into adulthood. Children with ADHD may experience challenges with attention, concentration, hyperactivity, and impulsive behaviour—though it’s important to remember that ADHD is not linked to intellectual ability.

ADHD is generally grouped into two types of symptoms:

  • Inattentive symptoms – These might include difficulty focusing, trouble completing tasks, forgetfulness, or finding it hard to follow instructions.
  • Hyperactive and impulsive symptoms – This can show up as constant fidgeting, excessive energy, difficulty sitting still, talking frequently or at unexpected times, and acting without thinking.

Many children experience a combination of both, known as a combined presentation.

Supporting Your Child: Beyond Just a Diagnosis

While medication is often considered as a first step in managing ADHD, it’s not the only option—and it isn’t right for everyone. For many families, a tailored approach that includes therapy, coaching, or a combination of strategies can make a real difference in helping children thrive at home, in school, and socially.

An ADHD assessment is the first step towards understanding your child’s unique needs and finding the right support path.

At Enlightened Minds, we offer a free ADHD screening assessment with a Chartered Psychologist. This initial step allows us to assess whether further assessment is warranted, before deciding to undertake the formal, full ADHD diagnostic assessment. Child ADHD Assessment Overview

A Professional, Child-Friendly Assessment Process

At Enlightened Minds, we offer comprehensive ADHD assessments for children and adolescents, using recognised clinical standards to ensure an accurate and supportive diagnosis. We combine the trusted DIVA 5 Diagnostic Interview (adapted for age-appropriate use) with a detailed developmental and background history provided by parents or caregivers. Where helpful, we can also use tools like the QB Check—a computer-based attention and activity test designed to support the diagnostic process in younger individuals.

All assessments are clinically led by Gemma Holmes, HCPC Registered and Chartered Psychologist, with input from our multidisciplinary team. Assessments are conducted remotely via phone or video call, ensuring flexibility and comfort for both you and your child.

The process takes place over two sessions:

  1. The first session focuses on gathering detailed background information from parents or caregivers.
  2. The second session involves the structured diagnostic interview with our Chartered Psychologist.

Building a Complete Picture

Before the assessment begins, we’ll ask parents or caregivers to complete a set of screening questionnaires. Where available, school reports, teacher observations, or any prior assessments can also be very helpful in understanding your child’s behaviour across different settings.

As part of gathering a full developmental history, we may request input from teachers or other family members who know your child well. This collaborative approach ensures we capture how symptoms present both at home and in school environments—key to an accurate ADHD diagnosis in children.

Our Approach: Holistic and Supportive

In line with best practice, Enlightened Minds follows a multidisciplinary approach to ADHD assessment. We also recommend that parents consult with their GP or paediatrician to rule out any medical conditions that might mimic or contribute to ADHD-like symptoms.

If, after diagnosis, you wish to explore treatment options, including medication, we will guide you back to your GP or specialist services. Should you encounter difficulties accessing support, we can connect you with our trusted partners for private care pathways.

Clarity and Understanding for Your Child’s Future

After completing the assessment, you'll receive a comprehensive diagnostic report within 4 weeks. This report will outline the assessment outcome, provide clear recommendations, and suggest next steps for supporting your child at home, in school, and socially. In many cases, we’re able to offer a verbal diagnosis at the end of the second session, giving you immediate clarity. If more time is needed, we’ll arrange a follow-up discussion before the report is delivered.

Assessment Cost: £850 for under 18s (includes full report and recommendations).

Post-Diagnostic Support for Your Child and Family

An ADHD diagnosis is just the beginning. At Enlightened Minds, we offer ongoing Post-Diagnostic Support, including:

  • Parent Coaching – Helping you understand ADHD and how to best support your child.
  • Study Skills & Focus Strategies – Tailored techniques to help your child thrive at school.
  • Managing ADHD Support Groups – For both parents and young people to connect, share, and learn.

We’re here to support your child’s journey—every step of the way.

I found the assessment extremely helpful and you made me feel very comfortable and you put me at ease. The diagnosis has been so validating. I can' thank you enough.

Why Are ADHD Diagnoses on the Rise?

Since the 1970s, there’s been a significant increase in ADHD diagnoses worldwide. This rise isn’t because ADHD is becoming more common—but because awareness, understanding, and diagnostic practices have improved dramatically. Decades ago, many individuals, especially adults and girls, were overlooked or misdiagnosed. Today, with better research and recognition of how ADHD presents across different ages and genders, more people are getting the clarity and support they’ve always needed.

Factors contributing to this rise include advances in psychological research, reduced stigma around mental health, changes in educational environments, and greater public awareness of neurodiversity.

    FAQs About ADHD For Children

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) isn’t just something that affects children—it’s a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that can continue into adulthood, often unnoticed or misunderstood. If you find yourself struggling with focus, impulse control, restlessness, or managing daily tasks, ADHD could be a contributing factor.

At Enlightened Minds, we specialise in helping adults recognise and understand how ADHD may be impacting their lives. Our comprehensive assessment service is designed specifically for adults, using a combination of clinical interviews, cognitive assessments, and validated diagnostic tools to identify ADHD traits.

We don’t just offer a diagnosis—we provide clarity. Our person-centred approach ensures you gain a deeper understanding of your unique cognitive style, along with practical strategies to navigate everyday challenges.

Whether you’re seeking answers for yourself or supporting a loved one, Enlightened Minds is here to guide you. With the right insights and support, managing ADHD becomes less about limitations—and more about unlocking your potential.

We can assess children for ADHD from around age 6 and upwards. This is typically when signs of ADHD become clearer, especially in structured environments like school. If you’re noticing challenges earlier, we’re happy to discuss concerns and advise on the best timing for assessment.

If your child consistently shows signs like difficulty focusing, excessive fidgeting, impulsive behaviour, struggles with completing tasks, or frequent daydreaming—both at home and school—it may be worth seeking an assessment. Teachers often flag concerns, but parents are usually the first to notice patterns.

Not at all. Our assessments are designed to be child-friendly and relaxed. Most of the detailed discussions happen with parents or caregivers. When we do engage directly with your child, we use age-appropriate language and approaches to ensure they feel comfortable and understood.

Yes, where possible, we encourage input from teachers or school staff. ADHD symptoms often present differently in school settings, so teacher observations can provide valuable insights to support an accurate diagnosis.

Following a diagnosis, you’ll receive a detailed report with clear recommendations. This may include advice on educational support, behaviour strategies, therapy options, or discussing medication with your GP. We also offer Post-Diagnostic Support, including parent coaching and focus strategies to help your child thrive.

Yes. A formal diagnosis can open the door to additional support through your child’s school, such as tailored learning plans or reasonable adjustments. We can guide you on how to share the report with the school and request the right provisions for your child’s needs.
