ASD & ADHD Assessments in Edinburgh – Your Questions Answered
Considering an assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can feel like a big step, whether for yourself or a loved one. To make the process clearer, we’ve gathered answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about our assessment services in Edinburgh. These cover everything from what to expect during an appointment to confidentiality, costs, and next steps after diagnosis.
The process usually includes an initial consultation, structured interviews, questionnaires (filled by you and possibly someone who knows you well), direct observations, and sometimes standardised tests. The aim is to gather a full picture of your developmental history, current behaviour, strengths, and challenges.
Typically, the full assessment process spans several hours across one or more sessions. Depending on complexity (e.g. co-occurring conditions, age, need for collateral reports), it may take a few weeks to complete the full report.
It depends. Some people self-refer, others are referred by a GP, psychiatrist, or another healthcare professional. We’ll clarify this in the first contact. If your GP’s records are needed, we can help facilitate access.
Costs vary depending on the type of assessment, the clinician’s experience, and whether it includes psychological testing. We can provide a quote once we understand your specific needs. Sometimes private medical insurance covers (or contributes to) part of the cost, worth checking.
After completing the assessment, you will receive a detailed report which outlines diagnosis (if any), strengths and challenges, and tailored recommendations. We’ll also discuss possible next steps, which may include therapy, educational support, workplace adaptations, behavioural strategies or referrals to other services.
Yes! Assessments are available for both children and adults. Many adults seek assessment for ADHD or ASD later in life when they recognise patterns in earlier years. Our clinicians are experienced in working across the lifespan.
We don’t guarantee a diagnosis, but the purpose of the assessment is to consider whether you meet the criteria for either condition. If you do, that will be communicated clearly in the report with relevant guidance. If not, we’ll still provide helpful feedback and recommendations.
All personal information is treated with strict confidentiality according to professional and legal standards. Reports are shared with you; if you want them sent elsewhere (to a school, employer, or GP), you must give consent.
Wait-times vary depending on current demand. Once you make contact, we can give an estimate of how long until your initial appointment. If needed, we can discuss options for prioritising or faster access.
Yes, depending on the nature of the assessment and what we decide at the initial consultation, some parts can be done virtually (e.g. interviews/questionnaires), while others require in-person components (e.g. certain observations or tests). Hybrid models are often possible to make things more convenient.
